In twenty years of working in salons, I've noticed that nobody walks in and says, "my scalp needs attention." They say their hair is dry, or thin, or flat, or won't hold a style. Yet when I put my hands on their hair, the answer is very often a few centimetres higher up, in the skin the hair grows out of.
Most of us spend time and money on our face with a cleanser, a serum and a moisturiser, and give the scalp nothing beyond shampoo. Here is why that's worth rethinking, and what simple scalp care looks like.
Your scalp is skin
The scalp has the same barrier, the same oil glands and the same needs as the skin on your face. It can get dry, tight and flaky. It can also get congested from product buildup. And it carries roughly 100,000 follicles.
The hair itself is different. It's about 90% keratin and it isn't living tissue, so damage builds up over time and can't be "healed." All we can do is condition it and protect it. What you do at the scalp shapes the environment every new strand grows out of, which is why I start there.
Stop declaring war on your own oil
Your scalp makes its own oil, called sebum, and it isn't the enemy. When we strip it hard and often, with very hot water, harsh scrubbing and frequent heavy shampooing, we can feed the cycle people complain about: a tight, dry scalp, then a greasy one, then another wash.
The approach that works better is to support the scalp instead of stripping it. Wash gently, use your fingertips instead of your nails, and treat the skin like skin.
What a simple scalp routine looks like
The method matters more than the product. This is the routine I teach clients, and it takes about ten minutes of active time a week:
- Start with dry hair. Water sits between the oil and your skin and dilutes it, so the treatment can't do its job.
- Section your hair into rows. The goal is to reach the scalp, not to coat the lengths.
- Apply along the partings. You need less than you think, around 1 to 2 ml for the whole head.
- Massage for two to three minutes. Use your fingertips, not your nails, and time it. Two minutes feels long the first time.
- Leave it on for at least two hours. Overnight is better, ideally with a silk or satin pillowcase. Longer than overnight adds nothing except extra washing.
- Wash out gently. Don't wet your hair first. Put shampoo straight onto the dry, oiled hair, work it until it turns milky, then add water.
Once or twice a week is enough. More is not better, it's just more washing.
This is the method I built my Scalp Serum (No 01) around. It's formulated with five carrier oils and five essential oils, including rosemary and peppermint, and made in our own facility in Beirut. The peppermint gives a cool tingle, which is menthol activating the cold receptors in your skin and is normal. Burning, stinging or redness is not normal, so wash it out and stop. Patch test behind your ear or inside your elbow for 24 hours before first use. The serum contains sweet almond oil, so if you have a nut allergy, please speak to your doctor first.
Be realistic about results
Hair grows about 1 to 1.5 centimetres a month, whatever you use. Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. And you're born with your follicle count. In twenty years of salon work I have never seen a product create a new follicle, and nothing does.
What consistent scalp care can do is keep your scalp comfortable and help your hair look fuller and healthier. Give it three months and stay consistent, because nothing visible happens in a week.
When it's not a product question
If you have persistent flaking or itching, pain, sudden or patchy hair loss, or broken skin, see a dermatologist. That's a medical question, and no routine or product should stand in for a proper diagnosis.
Start with one habit
You don't need a twelve-step routine. Start by treating your scalp like the skin it is: wash gently, and once a week give it two unhurried minutes of massage. Most people are surprised how quickly the scalp feels different, and everything that grows from it starts from there.
